Samuel Swisher, Ph.D.

“The ability to talk about ideas which have shaped and informed history has been one of the high points of teaching for me, as well as interacting with students,” said Dr. Sam Swisher, professor of history at Hannibal-LaGrange University. “HLG provides an environment where I can freely relate my faith to history in an authentic manner, not forcing conclusions which are not warranted but recognizing connections where they truly exist.”

Dr. Swisher joined the HLG faculty in 1996 and currently serves as chair of the History Department. Prior to coming to HLG, Swisher served in the United States Army as an Air Defense Artillery Officer, worked in the business world as a marketing representative and sales manager, and taught at a Catholic boys Prep School in Dallas. Because Swisher’s father was a career Air Force enlisted service member, he also grew up living in many different parts of the United States as well as Japan and Taiwan.

Swisher is married to Susan, who teaches in the Hannibal Public Schools, and they have two grown children.
